The role of digital marketing in the modern business era is a big one, it is a key element in most businesses marketing strategies and it is here to stay.
In the space of just a few years the internet has seen a massive explosion when it comes to education, resources and, of course, advertising & marketing. There is not a lot you cannot do on-line today and there are new technologies, tools and software being developed and introduced daily, which is both exciting and daunting, especially to the small business owner.
Adapt and Learn Digital Trends
We have all had to adapt to this new technology and, often reluctantly, had to embrace new ways of doing business and learn new skills, we have had to gain a decent level of “digital literacy”.
But where to next you ask? Where will the wonderful world wide web take us in terms of running and growing our businesses? How on earth are we going to keep up with all the changes and exciting new methods?
A Few Tips For Technology
We do not have a crystal ball to answer these questions, but we can offer you some guidance to help keep up with new digital trends and technologies… please read on!
- Don’t be afraid to play!
Do you remember when you were a child, you would learn so much through play? Both at school and in the home, we would experiment with play and be encouraged to discover new things by trying things out in a safe environment.
The same thing goes with technology, don’t be afraid to research and read about new tools and to try them out for yourself, most are free to trial, and you won’t break anything by having a look around and trying things out.
Be inquisitive, learn and experiment, be a kid again!
- Invest your time & money
There are some amazing sites and platforms available to help us learn, and a lot of the content is free. Sites like YouTube, Udemy and Lynda have some fantastic courses and lessons on all things digital and you can learn at your own pace and in the comfort of your own office or home.
We suggest you spend a short amount of time each day developing your digital skills, little and often is a great way to learn and doesn’t impede too much into your daily business life.
Have a look at other peoples’ reviews on courses and pick a tutor that you warm to, you may have to watch them and listen to their voice for quite a while so it’s important that you like the way they deliver their course material!
- Subscribe to newsletters and digital marketing platforms
As the digital explosion continues, many of the large corporations invest a lot of money and resources in to researching the digital trends marketplace, testing and learning new technologies daily. So, piggyback on their findings, subscribe to digital newsletters and resource centres that report on what’s new and happening in the digital world.
Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
Digital Marketing Magazine
- Communicate with others!
Forums, Facebook Groups, Linkedin, all of these are excellent places to help you stay up to date with digital trends and join conversations with fellow business owners and marketing professionals.
You can pose questions, ask advice and generally get involved in what’s happening in the digital business world.
- Google Alerts
At We Get Digital LOVE Google alerts! We use them for our clients and for ourselves. Merely tell Google the keywords or phrases you are interested in following and daily or weekly, Google will report back to you when any of these terms are mentioned in an article, blog or other on-line content, they even send you a link directly to that content.
- Keep an open mind
Because there are so many platforms and tools available, it is sometimes easy just to say, “Oh no, I don’t want to use Facebook, it isn’t right for my business”. In reality, Facebook might be a great platform to promote your business! Keep an open mind and see what platforms are working for your competitors and follow them.
